‘It was the child’

Those tumultuous words

that tumble out of my mouth

before I have time to catch them

The tone that attaches itself to them

before I have time to wipe them clean

The follow up,

Oh the follow up!

is always so much worse –

full of re-straightening apologies:

‘it was the child’ who spoke,

not the adult

And sometimes, just sometimes

I cannot control the reactions of the precious,

darling,

irrational child.
